Overview

630 stainless steel, also known as 17-4 PH or 17-4 Precipitation Hardening steel, is a martensitic stainless steel containing approximately 15–17% chromium and 3–5% nickel. Due to its precipitation-hardening characteristics, it has excellent corrosion resistance and superior strength at high hardening depths. It can be used in applications requiring good mechanical properties at elevated temperatures up to 600°F (316°C).

One of the key benefits of this grade is that it is available in solution treated conditions, at which they can be easily machined and age-hardened to attain high strength. The age treatment of grade 630 is carried out at low temperatures, to avoid significant distortion. Therefore, this grade is used for applications such as the manufacture of long shafts that do not require re-straightening after heat treatment.

Application

1. Aerospace field: For the manufacture of aircraft engines and oxidation products and high-pressure gas corrosive environment.

2. Automotive manufacturing: For the manufacture of brake and suspension parts and other parts.

3. Medical equipment: used to manufacture large bone scaffolds, artificial joints and artificial heart valves.

4. Oil and gas extraction: Used to manufacture pipe and valve materials, which are used in oil production environments due to their corrosion resistance and high temperature strength.

5. General machinery manufacturing: used to manufacture high-load pump parts, valves, springs, clasp rings, etc.

Corrosion Resistance

Grade 630 stainless steels have good corrosion resistance in many environments. They exhibit improved resistance against stress corrosion cracking, if aged at 550°C or more. However, grade 630 steels are less resistant to solution treated Condition A.

Heat Resistance

Grade 630 stainless steels have good resistance to oxidation. However, long-time exposure of grade 630 to temperatures of 370 to 480°C should be avoided, to prevent loss of toughness at ambient temperature. These grades should not be used at temperatures above age-hardening temperature, to avoid reduction of hardness and mechanical properties of the metal.
