SS 904L pipes, also known as UNS N08904, are manufactured with high chromium, nickel, and iron content, providing superior corrosion resistance, strength, and toughness. The low carbon content, combined with copper and molybdenum, contributes to excellent resistance against pitting and crevice corrosion. This material is well-suited for environments requiring resistance to elevated temperatures and high corrosion levels.
The high chromium content promotes and maintains a passive film that protects the material in numerous corrosive environments. 904L offers greater resistance to precipitation of ferrite and sigma phases during cooling and welding compared to other molybdenum-containing stainless steels like 316L and 317L. The low carbon content eliminates the risk of intercrystalline corrosion during cooling or welding, with a maximum service temperature of 450°C.

904L offers good formability and weldability characteristics due to its low carbon content. It provides excellent toughness and strength at both room temperature and elevated temperatures, along with superior fatigue strength even after prolonged exposure to high temperatures.
